Proyecto Mirador is the leading improved cookstove organization in Latin America. We make it easy for the rural poor to access our project.

In 2009, Proyecto Mirador became the fourth improved cookstove project in the world to be certified by the Gold Standard. Mirador then trades its Gold Standard verified emission reductions (VERs) on the voluntary carbon market to fund the project. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of carbon go to construct our Dos por Tres stove in rural areas of Central America.

Dos por Tres stoves remove toxic smoke from homes, reduce CO2 emissions that cause global warming, save trees and create jobs.

Firewood Consumption: Many households spend approximately 4–6 hours per week to collect firewood. With the Dos por Tres stove, this time is reduced by half. Other households cut expenses for firewood in half and use the savings to buy food.

Community Involvement: Our beneficiaries do not buy our stoves, nor are they donated. Mirador provides specialized materials and a technician to build the stove; and the beneficiary provides low-cost, locally available materials necessary for construction. We call this co-investment philosophy “No Cuesta, No Cuida” and it helps ensure stoves are used and cared for over the long term.

Reducing Pollution: Each Dos por Tres stove helps the planet by reducing 15 tonnes of CO2e per stove over 6 years, removing 47% of soot particles inside homes and saves 5–8 trees every year.

Local Economic Development: Each stove is built with local materials, supporting 27 microenterprises including brick manufacturers and specialized metal parts workshops.
